3 Reasons to Invest in the Spiritual Development of Your Children

One of the greatest ministry opportunities most people will ever experience is called parenting. As a parent you have the full responsibility to ensure your child grows into adulthood prepared to fulfill their vocation and their Kingdom assignment. Parents have to raise their children from a purpose driven model. Children that do not know who they are grow up to be adults who do not know who they are. People that do not know their purpose tend to take their lives in the wrong direction. But when you know your purpose you are able to tailor your decisions and choices in life to ensure that you fulfill your purpose.

The level of influence and the amount of time we have to minister to our children supersedes any ministry we can ever do outside of our homes. Because it is not glamorous filled with honor and notoriety, we can sometimes overlook the fact that our children can be the greatest fruit of our ministry.

Listed below are 3 Reasons to Invest in the Spiritual Development of Your Children:

1. Childhood training will be evident in adulthood.

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6

Whether a person’s childhood is rooted in righteousness or wickedness they are prone to stick with their upbringing. Childhood is one of the most unique periods of our lives. During childhood our personality, core beliefs and other interpersonal dynamics are developed. Unfortunately for many people unpleasant childhood experiences have affected them even through adulthood. What we put in our children or neglect to put in our children will become evident for many years to come. It is not just about taking them to church but instead discipling and training them to “be” the church.

2. Their gifts can be unlocked.

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.-Acts 1:8

When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.-Acts 19:6

As parents everything we do in regards to raising our children should be purpose driven in nature. One thing that is very important is making sure that our children receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is the gateway to flowing in the 9 gifts of the Holy Spirit. Children that are spirit filled are able to be activated in the prophetic so that they can begin to discern and recognize the voice of the Lord.

3. They are stronger in the faith.

And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates. Deuteronomy 6:6-9

Children that are discipled in the Word will have a better understanding of what they believe and why. As parents we are the greatest teachers in the lives of our children and we have the most time and influence to build them up in the faith. If we fail to disciple them in the Word when their faith is challenged like many others they might find themselves lured into no longer believing in God or even finding refuge and coming into agreement with other religions. My prayer is that parents around the globe would begin to take the time to invest in the spiritual development of their children.
