Everyone is born with spiritual gifts that are assigned to them according to the will of God for their lives. When I mention spiritual gifts I am only referring to the 9 gifts outlined in I Corinthians 12. These 9 gifts are supernatural manifestations of the Holy Spirit through the life of believers. The 9 spiritual gifts should not be confused with talents. Talents are innate abilities that an individual might have which in many cases can be anointed for service (i.e. singing, dancing, playing an instrument, drawing etc.,)
"Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. 2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. 3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. 4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. 12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ."
- I Corinthians 12:1-12
Listed below are four keys that can assist parents in recognizing the spiritual gifts of their children:
1. What are they drawn to? Sometimes just paying attention to their spiritual appetites can give us insight into their spiritual gifts. Is your child drawn to the prophetic? Does your child get excited to pray for the sick?
2. What has God spoken? As parents it is our duty and responsibility to seek the Lord concerning the destiny of our children. We can seek out no better source and get no better answer than what comes from our Heavenly Father. Spend time in prayer and ask God to reveal what gifts have been given to our children.
3. What has God revealed to them? Many children including my own begin to dream very early on and sometimes in these dreams God is revealing things to them that are relevant to what gifts He has given to them. As parents we should always talk to our children about their dreams to recognize if God is revealing some important truths.
4. What gifts run strong in your family? Many times certain spiritual gifts run in our family. The gift of healing or even miracles could be a gift that runs in your family and there is a chance this same gift could also be in your children.
"When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also."
